History
The Houston Heights' history began at the end
of the 19th century. When Houston Heights was founded in 1891, it was
a street-car suburb of Houston. It had its own local government until the City
of Houston annexed the neighborhood in 1919.
The Heights
have an enforced deed restriction to keep the neighborhood's character and
charm. That historic influence gives the exciting
community of Houston Heights many advantages over other neighborhoods in town. Known for its architectural distinction, small-town character, and proximity to
Downtown Houston, The Houston Heights is an enchanting step back into yester-years.
The
Heights is very much like a small town in the middle of a big city. Heights
Boulevard, the main artery through the area, serves as a living photograph of
"how it used to be," featuring turn-of-the-century homes and privately
maintained parks. From the Woodland Heights on the Southeast side of the
Heights, you can see the downtown skyline from many of the area's 2nd stories.
Other outstanding features of the Houston
Heights include the Heights Playground, completely designed, funded, and
constructed by the people of the community; its unique 19th street historic
business district; educational opportunities that include preschool, parochial
schools as well as outstanding public schools; a variety of annual events, such
as the Heights Garage Sale, Historic Heights Home and Garden Tour, Heights Fun
Run, Heights Festival, and Christmas in the Heights; and warm friendly people
who keep that small-town feeling alive. The Heights is a truly a unique old
neighborhood that is now a wonderful place to call home in the heart of the
city.

Housing Options
Priced very reasonably compared to some of the
other Houston neighborhoods, Houston Heights can be a great place for starter
homes. Or, should you be ready for your dream home, Houston Heights has that,
too!
Available homes vary from original bungalows to impressive new
construction, many which actually mirror the architecture of those grand
Victorian mansions from times past. This diversity is reflected in home prices
that range from below $100,000 to over $1 million.
